Know Thyself Course

Description

5-week course

Every Other Saturday 1pm-3pm

Knowledge is the hallmark of civilized human life. That special attribute which distinguishes human life from all other forms of life on this planet is the unique ability to acquire knowledge.  Knowledge is the capacity to know oneself and to have the ability to communicate that knowledge to others. The major premise of effective education must be “self-knowledge.”  In order to achieve the goals of identity and empowerment that we have described above, the educational process must be one that induces the awareness of who we are. An African American educational system rooted in self-knowledge must begin with African definitions in order to be successful in achieving its goals. The African self is a multidimensional occurrence that is represented within the individual person, but also transcends the individual; it is in the present, but also transcends time. If one could chart a two-dimensional concept of the African view of the self, it would represent the Soul (Spiritual), Tribal (Ancestral), Social (Relational), Personal (Mind), and Physical (Body).
